History & Heritage

Beloved since Roman times

Shaped like an inverted "Y", Lake Como is a glacial lake at the foot of the Alps, one of the deepest in Europe. The Romans prized it as a retreat — Pliny the Elder and Pliny the Younger both wrote of their villas on its shores nearly two thousand years ago.

From the Renaissance onwards, Como's wealth grew on silk weaving, an industry the city of Como is still famous for today. Aristocrats and artists built sumptuous lakeside villas with terraced gardens — Carlotta, Melzi, Balbianello — that remain the lake's signature sight.

In the 19th century the lake enchanted Romantic writers and composers such as Stendhal, Liszt and Verdi. Today it blends old-world glamour with international fame, drawing celebrities and travellers alike to villages like Bellagio, the "Pearl of the Lake".

Plan your trip to Lake Como

Transport, budget, climate, health: the essentials for a smooth trip to Italy's most elegant lake.

🚆 Transport & getting around
  • By air: Milan Malpensa (MXP), Linate (LIN) and Bergamo (BGY) are the closest airports.
  • By train: Como is ~40 min from Milan; Varenna and Lecco are on the eastern line.
  • Ferries (Navigazione Laghi) are the best way to hop between villages — buy tickets at the piers.
  • Roads along the lake are narrow and winding; a car helps for hillside villages but parking is tight.
  • The classic triangle is Bellagio – Varenna – Menaggio, all linked by frequent ferries.
💶 Budget & payment
  • Currency is the euro (€); cards and contactless are widely accepted.
  • Budget: €90–140/day · Comfort: €180–280 · Luxury: €400+ (Como is an upscale destination).
  • Bellagio and lakefront hotels command a premium — book well ahead for summer.
  • A service charge (coperto) is common in restaurants; extra tipping is optional.
  • Villa entries and ferries are mostly cash- or card-friendly; carry some euros for small piers.
🗣️ Language & etiquette
  • Language is Italian; English is widely spoken in hotels and tourist areas.
  • A friendly "Buongiorno" or "Buonasera" is always appreciated.
  • Dress smartly for villa visits and fine dining; cover shoulders in churches.
  • Local specialities: lake fish (lavarello), risotto, and Como-area wines.
🌤️ Climate & best time to visit
  • Lake Como has a mild, sub-Mediterranean micro-climate tempered by the water.
  • Spring (Apr–Jun): gardens in full bloom — arguably the best season.
  • Summer (Jul–Aug): warm (25–30 °C), busiest and liveliest, book early.
  • Autumn: mild and golden, fewer crowds; many villas close by November.
  • Winter: cool and quiet; some attractions and ferries run reduced schedules.
🏥 Health & safety
  • Lake Como is very safe; usual care with valuables in busy spots.
  • EU citizens: bring your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC/TEAM).
  • Non-EU visitors: travel insurance recommended.
  • Pharmacies show a green cross; hospitals are in Como and Lecco.
  • Take care on steep village stairways and lakeside paths.
🛂 Entry & connectivity
  • Italy is in the EU and the Schengen area: ID card or passport for entry.
  • EU roaming applies — your EU mobile plan works at no extra cost.
  • Non-EU travellers: check roaming or buy an Italian eSIM (TIM, Vodafone, WindTre).
  • Wi-Fi is common in hotels and cafés; coverage can dip in mountain areas.
  • Type C / F / L sockets (230 V) — bring an adapter if needed.
